Officers & Committees

The Executive Committee chaired by Dr Jeremy Taylor is the principal body responsible for running the affairs of the Society.  The committee receives recommendations from its subsidiary committees and representatives, and establishes coherent views and strategies.

The Committee is not concerned simply with the conservation of the many fine historic buildings in the city. It also seeks to influence the city planners regarding current developments so that future generations can look back with pride at what the present generation has achieved.

Environment – Janet Ede

The committee works to ensure that the City is maintained to the highest standards as regards to cleanliness and appearance. Particular attention is given to street furnishing and planting, signage, maintenance of open spaces, waste disposal, urban vandalism and litter, pollution by emissions, noise and bad lighting.
The committee undertakes annual audits of segments of the City and other occasional reports.

Membership and Publicity – Sue Torr

While increasing membership is a priority, the committee has responsibility for corporate membership and activities, exhibitions, competitions, some publicity and the website.

Planning Appraisal – Richard Cocke

The aim of the Planning Appraisal Committee is to conserve and enhance the City’s historic heritage and to encourage good modern architecture, urban planning and open spaces.
The lists of planning applications to the City Council are circulated to members, who study those that they consider to be important.  The Committee meets once a month to discuss the members’ views which are forwarded to the Head of Planning to be included in the recommendations tabled at the meetings of the City Council’s Planning Committee.
When there are large developments to be considered the Society’s Planning Appraisal Committee members are usually invited by the developers to presentations at which views can be expressed.

Transport – Geoff King

In accordance with its Constitution the Norwich Society is committed to preserving the unique medieval street scene of central Norwich, and broadly supports policies encouraging eco-friendly means of travel which reduce congestion and improve the quality of life for all users of the City - residents, businesses, shoppers and tourists.
